Let me tell you this.
Mike loves a clean car. I love organization.
Why we hadn't married the whole clean-organized-car concept sooner, is a mystery.
Regardless, I think I've made some huge leaps in creating little systems that are keeping our car tidy and organized.
I think what helped was when I sat down and brainstormed both the problem areas of our car and what we need from our car (aside from, you know, transportation). :)
First thing I had to figure out... Maddie.
The girl loves to draw in the car.
Inspired by Pinterest, I grabbed an extra diaper wipes case and lined up her crayons.
Then I loaded up a clipboard with lots of computer paper and slid both things in the pocket in front of her seat.
It's been this way for a while and so far, is working out great (she even refills her own paper when she runs out).
Next up was creating an emergency box to keep in the trunk.
I loaded a plastic container with first aid essentials (in the cute cloth clutch), a fully-charged camera, and umbrella.
I also grabbed some resealable bags and labeled each with a kiddie's name.
Each bag is filled with necessities for Maddie and Grayson.
I included an extra shirt, pants, undies/diapers, light sweater, socks, and even a hat/rubberband.
Should we ever be stranded, or should a kiddo have an accident, we're set (and I put clothes that are just a touch bigger than their current size so that they'll be okay in there for a while).
Another issue I face is my front seat. It seems to just slowly pile up with things that need to be returned, things that need to be brought inside, or things that need to be delivered to people or the post office.
A collapsable basket solved my problem.
It sits in the passenger seat and is super easy to move to the trunk when we need the seat for a person.
Otherwise, it holds everything that needs to be dealt with and keeps it compartmentalized. When I need to bring things in, it's a quick fix of just carrying in the basket.
This particular basket was actually from Joann's Fabric store!

We also seem to accumulate a fair amount of juice box straws, stickers that are no longer sticky, or broken toy pieces... all while driving.
And... another Pinterest inspiration! I grabbed a plastic cereal container from our pantry, lined it with a plastic shopping bag, and we have an instant trash can. Maddie can easily throw things away and it's a breeze to toss the bag and add another.
Toys.
Grayson is a boy that loves to play with toys when we're driving.
A plastic shoe box in-between both car seats allows him to grab toys and also lets Maddie hand him toys.
Plus, they aren't strewn all over the backseat this way.
And finally, the trunk.
I use cloth shopping bags 99% of the time and they have a tendency to start littering my backseat. Each one got folded up and placed inside one of the largest. When I need to return used bags, I just fold them up and slip them in.
I also realized that all we need in our trunk is our emergency box, reusable bags, and single stroller.
If we have a special occasion and need something else, it's easy to load it from the garage. But it's silly to cart around unnecessary stuff, like our double stroller that we only use on rare occasions.
So there you have it!
An organized car that works for all members of the family!

I love the crayon idea! And the cereal/trash thingy! Oh and th picnic basket! Thanks for the great ideas!
I love that you keep a camera in your "emergency" box. :-)
just pinned it! Great idea! =)
I could be wrong, but my first assumption was that the camera was in case of an accident, so she could take pictures of the damage. I have read articles suggesting that.
Love the crayons in the wipes container....Fantastic idea!
Love all of this! Where did you find the collapsible basket?
This is fabulous! I love love love an organized, clean car ... my hubby on the other hand, not so much. Hence why I'm saving to buy my own vehicle. :) But, I love the ideas you've put together. So great!! I actually have one of those collapsible baskets and I now have a new use for it. Thanks for such a great post!
love the wipe case for the crayons, did it today. Will share on my blog and give a link back to you. Came across this on pinterest last night!

Organizing Made Fun
Will be buying a collapsible basket tomorrow!
One suggestion- a strip of adhesive Velcro on the trash container and a matching strip on the side of the console - keeps mine from falling over when I turn corners.
Best by far --> the garbage "can"
Thank you for the complete post!
Patricia
The best by far for me, is the garbage "can" !!!
Thank you for the complete post,
Patricia
Great post! My favorites are the collapsible basket and toy bin between the seats. I just organized my car this week and I'm inspired to blog about it too!
Found you from Becky's pin!

I love all the organization going on in your car. You are awesome! I did the cereal container for trash too. I added Velcro to keep it in place. There is nothing you can't do with that stuff!
I need a basket for my front seat. I have the same problem. Love all your ideas. At first I thought the cereal container was a barf bucket. lol I keep large Ziplocs in my car to use for barf. The reality with kiddos...
KAREN...have you tried the motion sickness bands for wrists ? Found mine at Bilo grocery store near stomach items /rolaids. Also sold in the One Step Ahead kid catalog/online. Worked well for my bunch.

Oh my...where were you, I dunno, about well, probably 17 years old when my grownup girls were young. Great ideas...and I love an organized car. Thanks!
You have some great ideas. I especially love the emergency kit. I only wondered if the crayons ever melted in their box when the hot summer hits?
I loved this post - I am going to try the cereal container for garbage!! We always seem to accumulate trash in the car. :-)

Great idea about the Velcro!!

Keep going!

So smart! Thank you!!
So smart!! Thank you!!
You can get the collapsible bins from 31. (: they are wonderful!
Love this! Where did you get the collapseable basket?? Love it so! And I have been meaning to try the cereal/trash thingy and after seeing this I will get right on it!
I'm curious too about the crayons melting and leaking out of the wipe container.
For those wondering about the crayons melting, I'd say if it's 90°F or above outside with your car in an unshaded area, then the crayons will probably melt. I had some in the car in a shaded area in this kind of summer heat and they melted. Color pencils might work better in that case, although not ideal for a young one. One think I do alot of the time is prepare a bag for each child with a few toys, a couple of books, things to scribble on, colors, frozen water bottle, etc. that we take with us when we go places.
I always forget my Cloth bags when I go shopping. Why didn't I Ever think of just storing them all in the car?
My vehicles are so messy. This is a great inspiration. I love the thought of the spare clothes I shove so much stuff in my diaper bag that could just ride around in the car! Thanks for sharing.

She found it at JoAnn's craft store (it's in the article ;-) )
I also use a picnic basket for car organization. We call it the "go bag". It sits in our mud room and anything you want to take with you on the trip goes in. Then, when we return it collects all the stuff that should go back inside the house. It is a working mother's best friend.
Yes, yes, on the ziplock bags with an outfit for each child. I did this when raising our 4 children, and it saved us a lot of hassle at unexpected times!
I will definitely do this!!.. save me the trouble having thing all over the car. thanks!
Great ideas! I would leave the battery out of the camera if you store it in your car. The camera will actually drain the battery over time, even if you have it in an off position.
I've tried the cereal box trash can and even put Velcro on the bottom. How do you keep yours in place? Mine falls over and ends up God-knows-where (under-foot, under a seat or in the way back of the car). Entirely unusable so far. Help!
